Bird Watching

Bird watching is gaining immense popularity worldwide. It is not just a discipline of Ornithology, but also a hobby giving lifelong pleasure.

Out of about 8600 bird species and 30000 sub species known to science, the Fauna of British India series on Birds enumerated 2400 forms (species & sub-species) of which a synopsis of Birds listed in 2061 forms of which 300 are winter visitors, chiefly from the Palaeartic region to the North.

Birds existing in humid evergreen forests like Goa, posses’ extraordinarily brilliant plumage. WWF (INDIA) Goa division has recorded over 300 varieties of Birds. The most COMMON – The House Crow, Sparrow, Mynas, Bulbul, etc. RAPEST – Mountain Quail, Jerdons, Courser and Pintail Ducks, etc. SONGSTER – Grey winged Blackbird, Malabar Whistling Thrust and Shama, etc. TALKER – Hill Myna.

ITINEREARY – (The day trip will covered all places in a day.)


DAY – 1
Depart from hotel early morning to Carambolim lake where water birds will be sighted at the peak of their activity. One might also see night foragers returning to their roosts. As the sun comes up towards noon we travel west, towards Bondla Sanctuary to watch the day feeders out in the fields, and later in the core of the woods at the Bhagwan Mahavir National Park, where you will camp for the night at Shanti.
 
Shanti – She is a tiny hamlet constructed on primitive line with some huts designed for two people, complete with private shower and WC, and some huts with a common shower and WC. Shanti is located in the core of the forest near the unique and famous National Monument of Lord Shiva, in Tambdi Surla.

Shree Mahadev Temple --- this temple is the only specimen of its kind presenting Kadamba ( ancient ruler ) architecture in Goa. The temple dates back to the 13th century A.D. and is built entirely of basalt and schist stone masonry having monolithic pillars which depicts the style more or less of Hemadpanti i.e. mixed Hoysaila Yadava style. This temple has been declared as one of the three national monuments of Goa.

Tired? Refresh yourself with a shower. (optional at extra cost – rejuvenate yourself with a ayurveda massage and absorb the herbal goodness of a hot bath) and get set for a homely dinner. After dinner a nature trail in the woods to observe Crepuscular species such as Night Herons, Owls, Night Jars, etc.


DAY – 2;">
Early next morning begins a hunt for woody birds & later vai Valpoi head to Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary & the fishing docks to watch Sea birds such as Sea Gulls, Brahmani Kite, white breasted Sea Eagle, etc. Form the dock to the larger water sheets where bird activity continues nearly all day, till you get back to your beach hotel.
